Baker<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The Meeting House<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now to the aged meeting-house close by,<br \/>\nWith &#8220;gallery&#8221; behind the congregation.<br \/>\nMy memory harks back almost to infancy<br \/>\nWhen, visitor, my child imagination<br \/>\nWas fired to epic pitch to see two girls<br \/>\nStill in short frocks, up in the \u201csingers-seats&#8221;\u00ad<br \/>\nEdna-\u2019n&#8217;-Grace Bliss, two village pearls<br \/>\nUpon one string; or, change the trope, two beats<br \/>\nUpon one key whose note the chord completes.<br \/>\nBefore me sat two elfins clad in pink,<br \/>\nThey were the children of the town store-keeper-<br \/>\nWhat was his name? &#8230;Hall &#8230;Holman &#8230;Howe, I think;<br \/>\nAnd I, whose loveless frocks were dark and meeker<br \/>\nThan any character Moses could claim,<br \/>\nFell to them straight, and on mature reflection<br \/>\nWhich lasted through the sermon and amen,<br \/>\nDecided pink must be angels&#8217; selection.<br \/>\nI judge they were but ordinary fry,<br \/>\nBut in my Hall of the Immortals they hang high.<br \/>\nIn that quaint church there never was a wedding<br \/>\nThat I heard of, but many a funeral-<br \/>\nFrom darling Mattie Ufford just a-budding<br \/>\nInto a sweeter bud, to several<br \/>\nWhose tree of life long since lost fruit as bloom,<br \/>\nAnd those whose sturdy plant withered at noon,<br \/>\nThere preached for many years S.K.B. Perkins<br \/>\nOf Congregational relation;<br \/>\nAnd every other Sunday for their sins<br \/>\nHis people heard the Methodist persuasion;<br \/>\nThere on each other month\u2019s beginning Sunday<br \/>\nRed-bearded Deacon Barber from the Hollow,<br \/>\nAnd Village Deacon Marston grey and kindly,<br \/>\nPassed the communion bread with wine to follow\u00ad<br \/>\nUntil religious schism made the blot<br \/>\nThat lasted years of days.
