\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The Meeting House<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now to the aged meeting-house close by,
\nWith “gallery” behind the congregation.
\nMy memory harks back almost to infancy
\nWhen, visitor, my child imagination
\nWas fired to epic pitch to see two girls
\nStill in short frocks, up in the \u201csingers-seats”\u00ad
\nEdna-\u2019n’-Grace Bliss, two village pearls
\nUpon one string; or, change the trope, two beats
\nUpon one key whose note the chord completes.
\nBefore me sat two elfins clad in pink,
\nThey were the children of the town store-keeper-
\nWhat was his name? …Hall …Holman …Howe, I think;
\nAnd I, whose loveless frocks were dark and meeker
\nThan any character Moses could claim,
\nFell to them straight, and on mature reflection
\nWhich lasted through the sermon and amen,
\nDecided pink must be angels’ selection.
\nI judge they were but ordinary fry,
\nBut in my Hall of the Immortals they hang high.
\nIn that quaint church there never was a wedding
\nThat I heard of, but many a funeral-
\nFrom darling Mattie Ufford just a-budding
\nInto a sweeter bud, to several
\nWhose tree of life long since lost fruit as bloom,
\nAnd those whose sturdy plant withered at noon,
\nThere preached for many years S.K.B. Perkins
\nOf Congregational relation;
\nAnd every other Sunday for their sins
\nHis people heard the Methodist persuasion;
\nThere on each other month\u2019s beginning Sunday
\nRed-bearded Deacon Barber from the Hollow,
\nAnd Village Deacon Marston grey and kindly,
\nPassed the communion bread with wine to follow\u00ad
\nUntil religious schism made the blot
\nThat lasted years of days. For every spot,
\nOr church or state, has some of Main Street in it;
\nYet none methinks so much as the poor cynic
\nWho sees but Main Street when he tries to limn it.<\/p>\n
